Though referred by some sources as a dragon, the zmeu is nevertheless distinct, because it usually has clear anthropomorphic traits: it is humanoid and has legs, arms, the ability to create and use artifacts such as weapons, and to ride a horse, and has the desire to marry young girls.

A Slavic dragon is any dragon in Slavic mythology, including the Polish żmij, Russian zmei (or zmey; змей), Ukrainian zmiy (змій), and its counterparts in other Slavic cultures (See § Forms below).

A Zmei Gorynich or zmei (Russian: змей; plural: Russian: змеи, romanized: zmei), in skazki (Russian folktales) and byliny (Russian epic poetry), is a dragon or serpent, or sometimes a human-like character with dragon-like traits.

Zmej is a multi-headed dragon (with 3, 7 or 9 heads) that breathes fire. Zmej is also an anthropomorphic creature, which is best illustrated by the motif of the Dragon Lover. Dragon Love is a popular motif in Bulgarian folk songs.

With its origins deeply rooted in Slavic folklore, this mythical creature is believed to possess both formidable and human-like qualities. Legends and tales revolving around the Zmey dragon abound, highlighting its connection to water sources and its ability to control the climate.
