Apr 5, 2011 · eSATA was originally used for servers, where you have a seperate backplane with a RAID array of multiple drives, and the esata cable went between it and the server. Usually it'd take a large RAID array to come close to using the full bandwidth of a single sata connection, but you'd need a separate power supply for all those drives in the backplane.

Jan 27, 2011 · At that point it is better to purchase an enclosure with eSATA connectors and insert the hard drive into that. Converting from SATA to USB then back to SATA is stupid, as it would involve a significant performance loss just to reuse an USB cable.

Jul 18, 2017 · Modern eSATA+USB combo ports. As @JW0914 pointed out, there exist devices with ports that double as both eSATA and USB ports (they can fit both connectors). If that were the case (for the HP Proliant N54L unfortunately it is not), then of course you could plug either an eSATA or an USB device into that port using the appropriate cable.
