Florida began issuing REAL ID compliant credentials after January 1, 2010. Because Florida is a REAL ID compliant state, Florida driver licenses and ID cards are accepted nationwide as official identification for domestic air travel and access to military bases and most Federal facilities.

Starting in August 2017, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles began issuing a new, more secure Florida driver license and ID card. By December 2017, the new credential became available at all service centers throughout Florida and online.

Customers must renew their Florida driver license or ID card every eight years. Florida driver license and ID card holders may renew their credential up to 18 months in advance of the expiration date online or in a service center.
