The Gerridae are a family of insects in the order Hemiptera, commonly known as water striders, water skeeters, water scooters, water bugs, pond skaters, water skippers, water gliders, water skimmers or puddle flies.

What Do We Know About the Phylogeny of the Semi-Aquatic Bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Gerromorpha)? A phylogeny for all families and subfamilies, and for all genera but those assigned to the two most diverse families, Veliidae and Gerridae, is compiled from the many studies by the late Dr. Nils Møller Andersen.

All of the largest adults of semiaquatic Heteroptera are species of Gerridae, but the family has many diverse sizes, forms, and life histories. Adult “water-striders” are distinguished by their relatively large size, preapical tarsal claws (Fig. 97), and elongate metafemurs that extend well past the tip of the short abdomen.

Gerridae uses the small hairs on its body and legs for moving across the wate surface. The head is usually elongated in front of the eyes to form a rostrum. The development of the wings can vary significantly within the population. They can move very quickly, up to 1.5 meters per second.
