2025年2月27日 · The new 4-8-2 debuted on the Chesapeake & Ohio to replace its 4-6-2 Pacifics, which simply could no longer effectively handle the increased weight of passenger trains, particularly over steep grades. While the Mountain was initially designed for passenger service it also later saw use on fast freights as well.

Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 4-8-2 represents the wheel arrangement of four leading wheels, eight powered and coupled driving wheels and two trailing wheels. This type of steam locomotive is commonly known as the Mountain type, [1] though the New York Central Railroad used the name Mohawk for their 4-8-2s.

The Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad took delivery of five 4-8-2s (road numbers 1401 through 1405) from the American Locomotive Company in 1924. These "Mountains" had 69" drivers and were not particularly well suited for passenger service and were relegated to secondary trains.

These new 4-8-4s began to handle trains with as many as 21 heavyweight cars, eliminating the need for double-heading and running extra sections of many of the Richmond, VA to Jacksonville, FL "Specials".
