2014年3月24日 · On Aug. 27, 1957, ATSF 5021 (2-10-4) and ATSF 3780 (4-8-4) were used as helpers through the Abo Pass between Belen and Mountainair, New Mexico. No. 5021 returned to Belen first, followed by No. 3780, making ATSF 3780 the last Santa Fe steam locomotive to perform revenue service for the Santa Fe.

Nice Baldwin builder photo of the 1941 4-8-4 Northern built as ATSF #3780 (serial #62469, class 3776). This was the last steam engine to operate on the Santa Fe line. It was sold for scrap to the Luria Bors. on 5/4/1959 after nearly 18 years of service.

Looking for more power, the AT&SF bought two 4-8-2 "Mountains" from the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1918. One of them, road number 3700, was a coal burner and the other, road number 3701, burned oil. Before these two were delivered, another ten were ordered: five coal burners and five oil burners (road numbers 3702 through 3711).
