Police are responsible for the safety of a patient on a section 136. If an Emergency Department allows the police to leave, they take on this responsibility and should be confident they have staff and resources to deal with the risk of the patient absconding.

The mental health suite is a place of safety, security and comfort for individuals who have been arrested by the police under the Section 136 of the Mental Health Act following concerns that they are suffering from a mental disorder. This protects the person’s own safety, the safety of others, and enables health professionals to carry out an assessment to decide on the best next steps.

Our service is for all people detained under section 136, whetever their age. People using the service have to be detained under section 136 of the mental health act by police and are escorted by police to the suite. This service is available 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. The suite has disabled access and free parking is available.
