BB30-named for its required spindle size-narrows Q-factor, increases ankle clearance, and ups bearing durability. Along with a 30 mm spindle, it requires an oversized 68mm or 73mm bottom bracket shell and PressFit bearings held in place by snap rings.

The BB30 bottom bracket shell is typically 68mm (road) or 73mm (mtb) wide with an inside diameter of 42mm. Originally the BB30 system was designed to use 30mm diameter crank spindles. However, frame's with BB30 shells can be used many other sized crank spindles.

SRAM DUB BB30 bottom brackets are compatible with frame shells with an inner diameter of 42 mm. DUB PressFit 30 and BB386 bottom brackets are compatible with frame shells with an inner diameter of 46 mm.

Many companies make a variety of length spindles using the same 8 lobe, 30mm spindle. The standard of the ends of the spindle could still be called "BB30" as they were developed for the BB30 application.
