According to Directive 2009/48/EC, a toy intended for use by children under 36 months must be designed and manufactured in such a way that it can be cleaned. A textile toy must, to this end, be washable, except if it contains a mechanism that may be damaged if soak washed.

The current harmonized standard EN71-1:2005+A8:2009 Safety of Toys – Part 1: Mechanical and Physical properties, is still published by the EU Commission in the latest EU Official Journal. Now European standardization has published a new amendment A9 CEN EN71-1:2009+A9:2009 (incorporating corrigenda) on August 31, 2009.
