Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP) protects data traffic from a failed router or circuit, like Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) and Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), while allowing packet load sharing between a group of redundant routers. This feature was introduced.

GLBP provides automatic device backup for IP hosts configured with a single default gateway on an IEEE 802.3 LAN. Multiple first-hop devices on the LAN combine to offer a single virtual first-hop IP device while sharing the IP packet forwarding load.

GLBP in many ways is the "big brother" of HSRP, it follows a lot of the same design philosophies while adding load balancing and in some places correcting some of the design issues of HSRP. GLBP provides default gateway redundancy and per host load-balancing.

GLBP provides nonstop path redundancy for IP by sharing protocol and MAC addresses between redundant gateways. GLBP also allows a group of routers to share the load of the default gateway on a LAN. Configuring GLBP is very similar to HSRP.
