The Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) is a class of air-cushioned landing craft (hovercraft) used by the United States Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). They transport weapons systems, equipment, cargo and personnel from ship to shore and across the beach. It is to be replaced in US service by the Ship-to-Shore Connector (SSC).

The LCAC floats upon a cushion of air and a propeller at the rear of the craft drives it forward. Its most distinguishing feature is its ability to move on either land or sea. In addition to being able to transport one Type 90 tank, it can transport 30 people and is active in aid activities for both domestic and overseas disasters.

The LCAC vehicle is an amphibious warfare vessel, designed to transport weapons, armored vehicles, equipment cargo, and personnel of a Marine Air/Ground Task Force both from the ship to shore'and across the beach.

The LCAC is a nondisplacement landing craft and the LCU a conventional displacement landing craft is an integral parts of the ship-to-shore movement. This research will differentiate the capabilities of the AAV from the landing craft (LCU and LCAC) but will not study the AAV in detail; however, an occasional reference will be made to it.

DEFINING STATE-OF-THE-ART The first LCACs were delivered in 1984 with a service life design of 20 years. Following decades of fleet service, the LCAC will operate well into the 21st century with markedly improved performance and increased life span due to a Service Life Extension Program (SLEP).

An air-cushioned landing craft, also called an LCAC (landing craft, air cushioned), is a modern variation on the amphibious landing boat. The majority of these craft are small- to mid-sized multi-purpose hovercraft, also known as "over the beach" ("OTB") craft.
