The Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) was a reconnaissance and raiding unit of the British Army during the Second World War. Originally called the Long Range Patrol (LRP), the unit was founded in Egypt in June 1940 by Major Ralph Alger Bagnold, acting under the direction of General Archibald Wavell.

2022年12月2日 · After completing their training, the Long Range Desert Group engaged in a number of different missions: hit-and-run raids against Italian forces, mapping terrain, ambushing convoys and working with other special operatives. Their most important role was that of “road watch,” which took place along the route from Tripoli to Benghazi.

The men of the Long Range Desert Group (LRDG) in the Middle East in World War II did this, and more. The LRDG had been variously described as “arguably the most dashing and successful irregular formation on either side in the entire war,” and “probably one of the most cost-effective special forces in the history of warfare.”
