Objective assessment of postpartum blood loss is an important step in identifying postpartum haemorrhage. The Brass-V drape and MaternaWell tray have been designed for routine measurement of postpartum blood loss. The perceived utility and acceptability of these devices to the parturients and birth attendants still begged exploring.
Primary postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the most common form of major obstetric haemorrhage. The traditional definition of primary PPH is the loss of 500 ml or more of blood from the genital tract within 24 hours of the birth of a baby after vaginal birth and 1000 ml after cesarean birth. PPH can be minor (500–1000 ml) or major (more than 1000 ml).
For these reasons, every obstetric unit should have a readily available, sterile ‘obstetric hemorrhage equipment tray’ upon which is placed all the necessary material for surgical management of PPH. In a sense, the tray becomes the equivalent of a ‘crash cart’ for cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
