This paint scheme, combining yellow, red and black, has come to be called the Kodachrome paint scheme due to the colors' resemblance to those on the boxes that Kodak used to package its Kodachrome slide film (which was heavily used by railfans of the time).

The scheme nicknamed " Kodachrome " by fans who saw a similarity between its red, yellow, and black colors and the colors of Kodachrome film boxes. Richard Percy started archiving the Southern Pacific " Kodachromes " so Jesse Koski began the Santa Fe " Kodachromes " just to keep everything fair.

SD40 7303 illustrates something I've wondered about - did SP apply a thinner coat of red than Santa Fe, or use a different brand of paint altogether? On a lot of SP Kodachromes that survived into the 90's, the red was clearly wearing through to reveal the undercoat of yellow, and you can see that beginning to happen on 7303.

The attempted merger of the SP and Santa Fe railroads brought the proposed red and yellow SPSF "Kodachrome" paint scheme applied to various locomotives (and a few cabooses) of each railroad in anticipation of the approval of the merger.

Since the previous pictures posted have all been of Kodachromes with "SF" on the hood, here is one of my favorites of SP's Kodachromes. Taken in October of 1986, 2 K-chrome SD45R's lead an Espee eastbound at Dike, CA (across from Devore).
