Pniel is not one of Cape Town's greatest tourist attractions but a drive through Helshoogte Pass from Stellenbosch will take you through this quaint farming village where life has a much slower pace than that of Cape Town.

Pniel is a settlement in Cape Winelands District Municipality in the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is a settlement and United Congregational Church of Southern Africa (UCCSA) mission station between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, established in 1843.

The establishment of a mission station at Pniël is marginally connected to the emancipation of slaves in 1834. The emancipated slaves were obliged to stay on as farm workers for another 4 years, thus it was only from 1 December 1838 that they were allowed to leave the farms.
