She was laid down on 12 March 1941 by Blohm & Voss, Hamburg as yard number 582, launched on 27 November 1941 and commissioned on 22 January 1942 under Oberleutnant zur See Hans Klatt.

Sunk on 22 February 1943 in the North Atlantic east of Newfoundland, in position 47.44N, 33.43W, by depth charges from the US Coast Guard cutter USCGC Campbell and the Polish destroyer Burza. 36 dead and 11 survivors. 11.14 hrs, NE of Jan Mayen Island: the boat was attacked by the Catalina astern of convoy QP 14.
