Banjo-Tooie levels are massive, overwhelming, confusing, and directionless. 100% in Banjo-Tooie is a serious undertaking without a guide. Both games are excellent but Kazooie will always be better imo. TL;DR: Banjo-Tooie is big and empty and confusing to navigate and has too much backtracking and tedium but is still a good game in its own right.

That being said the sheer scale of Tooie was so impressive at the time - it was a very ambitious game and that was a real thrill. I can't fault them for doing it but the result as you make clear is a less tight experience. I'll also say while the first game is the better game Tooie does manage to be fresh and distinct while also being familiar.

Banjo-Tooie is the follow up to a beloved 3D collectathon platformer from a developer that could seemingly do no wrong throughout the 90s. It pushed the N64 to its limits and solidified the duo’s status as Nintendo mascots even today, when the company doesn’t own the rights anymore.
