The Agricultural (Farm) Labor Survey provides the basis for employment and wage estimates for all workers directly hired by U.S. farms and ranches (excluding Alaska) for each of four quarterly reference weeks.

Feb 6, 2025 · The Farm Labor Survey (FLS) conducted by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) is based on semi-annual phone interviews with a random sample of farm employers (crops and livestock) who are asked to provide quarterly data on their wage bill, employment counts, and average weekly hours for all hired workers, by occupation.

Oct 24, 2012 · NASS conducts hundreds of surveys each year on issues including agricultural production, economics, demographics and the environment. Every five years NASS also conducts the Census of Agriculture, providing the only source of uniform, comprehensive agricultural data for every county in the nation.

Workers hired directly by farm operators numbered 808,000 during the week of July 7-13, 2024, up 3 percent from the July 2023 reference week. Farm operators paid their hired workers an average gross wage of $19.11 per hour during the October 2024 reference week, up 2 percent from the October 2023 reference week.

The following Farm Labor report, originally scheduled for release November 25, 2020, includes quarterly and annual average farm labor data for year 2020; these data are regularly published on an annual basis, as part of the NASS Farm

Starting in 2020, model-based estimates of hired workers, average hours worked, average wage rates, and the associated sub-items were produced from the current survey to establish more precise estimates. The sample size level is optimized to account for declining response rates. There were no program or content changes in 2022.

This annual release contains regional and national data for self-employed, unpaid, and hired workers and wage rates for selected weeks; also included in the report are the hired worker numbers and wage rates for selected states and changes in farm workers per region.

The National Agricultural Workers Survey (NAWS) is an employment-based, random-sample survey of U.S. crop workers that collects demographic, employment, and health data in face-to-face interviews. The survey began in Fiscal Year (FY) 1989; since then, over 77,000 crop workers have been interviewed.
