The Springfield Model 1877 was a variant of the Springfield Model 1873 carbine. In 1877, many changes were made to both the Model 1873 rifle and the Model 1873 carbine (the carbine was just a shorter version of the rifle).

The 1877 Model rifle was originally conceived as a target rifle for the then fast-growing sport of long-range target shooting. Sometimes referred to as the “Creedmoor” Sharps, because of the first matches held at the Creedmoor on Long Island, the 1877 Model was purpose-built for rifle matches shot at 800, 900, and 1000 yards.

New production Model 1877 Sharps rifles were introduced by Shiloh Rifle Manufacturing Company in late 2018. The name Sharps elicits visions of big-bore, single-shot rifles in the hands of rough-cut western frontiersmen. No firearm in American history has received so much attention with so few made.

The Lower-style of the 1877 rifles were very unique because they were made as lightweight sporting rifles. Out of 75 rifles sent to J.P. Lower, 45 were in .45-70, with either a 28-inch round barrel or a 30-inch octagonal barrel.

Sharps 1877 Rifle. Exceedingly rare. Called the Lower model as the total production of 75 was shipped to J.P. Lower in Denver, Colorado. Very good blue on barrel. Barrel is marked J.P. Lower behind rear sight. Case colors on frame have faded to gray. Very good wood. Bore is excellent and gun really does not show much use. Very scarce gun.

Presentation quality wood with a scalloped pistol grip. Inlayed grip and forend. Checkering with accent panels, Rigby flat. French grey finish.
