Type C6 ship SS Grand Canyon State as a converted auxiliary crane ship. The Type C6 ship is a United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) designation for a container ship developed during the transition years from moving goods by breakbulk cargo to containerization.

SS Keystone State (T-ACS-1) is a crane ship in ready reserve for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the state of Pennsylvania, which is also known as the Keystone State.

These missions feature sealift operations in regions with inadequate port facilities, to aid U.S. military and humanitarian efforts around the world. SS Keystone State remains in the Ready Reserve Force in Alameda, California, and can be ready for service within five days.

In 1972 / 1973 APL converted the former Breakbulk Cargo Vessels Marad Design C4-S-1qa into partial Containerships. Work was performed by the Todd Shipyards Corp.at Seattle, Washington and the vessels were delivered between September 1972 and February 1973.
