By July 1950, the division began offensive operations to the north and crossed the 38th parallel on October 9th. Closing on North Korea’s capital ten days later, the “First Team” was “First in Pyongyang”.

In 1943, the 1st Cavalry Division became dismounted and was processed for deployment to the South Pacific, where they would fight throughout World War II as foot cavalry, island-hopping like Marines.

The 1st Cavalry Division saw its first combat during World War II in the invasion of the Admiralty Islands on 29 February 1944. Its fighting would continue on Leyte and finally on Luzon where the 1st Cavalry Division was “first” in Manila as the Flying Column liberated the internees at Santo Tomas University.

On March 11, 1944 a platoon sized reconnaissance force from U.S. Army, 1st Cavalry Division made an amphibious landing in a landing craft supported by a PT Boat on Hauwei Island but were ambushed and fought their way back to their landing craft that ran around and sank. After three hours in the sea, the platoon was rescued by another PT Boat.
