The history of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) includes the work of many researchers who contributed to the discovery of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and described the underlying physics of magnetic resonance imaging, starting early in the twentieth century.

May 20, 2024 · The First Human MRI Scans. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw the construction of the first MRI scanners capable of imaging the human body. In 1977, Dr. Raymond Damadian and his team completed the first full-body MRI scan of a human, marking a significant milestone in medical imaging.

July 3, 1977 – The first MRI body scan is performed on a human using an MRI machine developed by American doctors Raymond Damadian, Larry Minkoff and Michael Goldsmith.

Oct 7, 2020 · The first full-body MRI scan machine was developed by John Mallard and his team at the University of Aberdeen throughout the late 1970s. This machine was used to produce the first “clinically useful” image of a patient in 1980.

Nov 20, 2019 · By 1977, Dr. Damadian completed construction of the first whole-body MRI scanner, which he dubbed "Indomitable." Since that first patent was issued, the medical use of magnetic resonance imaging has developed rapidly. The first MRI equipment in health was available at the beginning of the 1980s.

Feb 26, 2024 · Lauterbur introduced the concept of spatial information in magnetic resonance signals, which allowed for the creation of the first MR images. Mansfield, on the other hand, enhanced the technique by developing a way to rapidly scan the body and produce clearer, more precise images.

Aug 9, 2018 · Dr. Raymond Damadian’s ‘Indomitable’ – a full-body MRI scanner and the first of its kind. Around the same time, a chemist named Paul Lauterbur, working at the State University of New York, published the first true MR image in Nature in March, 1973.

Mar 27, 2023 · In the 1950s and 1960s, scientists and engineers began developing the first MRI machines. In 1971, Raymond Damadian, a physician and researcher, published a paper on using NMR to detect cancer in living tissue. He went on to develop the first MRI machine and patented the technology in 1974.
