In the 1980’s the rate of increase of the minority population of the United States was nearly two times faster than that of the 1970’s. A rate of increase cannot be "faster". Also, as some have noted; 0.5 times faster than n is not the same 0.5 times as fast as n. But this has no bearing on the grammatical correctness.

May 21, 2014 · Replacing "two times" with "twice" is natural and recommended; replacing "three times" with "thrice" is weird and archaic. There's no logical reason why that should be so — that's just how English is used these days. "It only happened the last twice" sounds wrong because last is an adjective, and it needs to modify a noun (times).

I don't believe "X times more" is ambiguous. While "10% more" means 1.1x the original, making "300% more" logically mean 4x the original, this doesn't happen with "X times more." You would never say "a tenth times more" or "half times more" or even "one time(s) more." And "one and a half times more" should be 1.5x the original.

In "x times smaller," the word "smaller" inverts the ratio. There are of course other ways of expressing this, but that's a matter of style. Using "by a factor of" doesn't necessarily fix things: (1) A millimeter is ten times smaller than a centimeter. …

That question doesn't mean, for example, I asked her for three hours! This noun is countable and usually used in the plural.

That's why I made the comment that if Item A is 5 times bigger than Item B, I'd intuitively think it's 500% the size. But because of what you pointed out, the one time bigger example, I'd maybe hesitate between 500% and 600% the size. –

What do lengths of time with the "bi" prefix mean"? I have understood bicentennial as once every two hundred years, but biannual as meaning twice a year. Do biweekly and bimonthly mean twice a week...
