The most successful German heavy reconnaissance armored car before the war was the Sd.Kfz.231 8-rad, which eventually soldiered on every front, replaced in 1944 by the much heavier Sd.Kfz.234. A special version was derived from the Sd.Kfz.231 as soon as 1940, the Sd.Kfz.263 (Gerat 95), also called Funkspähwagen.

The Schwerer Panzerspähwagen (German for 'heavy armoured reconnaissance vehicle'), is a series of six- and eight-wheeled armoured cars that were used by Germany during the Second World War. In the German Army, armoured cars were intended for the traditional cavalry missions of reconnaissance and screening.

Sd.Kfz. 263 (Gerat 95) was a heavy cross-country radio vehicle (“Funkspähwagen”) equipped with extra long-range radio equipment and an additional radio operator. Sdkfz 263 was based on the Sd.Kfz. 232 series. Sdkfz 263 8-rad was developed from 1934 to 1938 alongside the Sd Kfz 231 and 232 vehicles.

The Panzerfunkwagen – armoured radio vehicle – (Sd. Kfz. 263) (8-Rad) was made from early 1937 to January 1943. It was more an armoured radio station than a scout car. It was not used by reconnaissance units, exclusively. Signals units and higher staffs had such vehicles, too.

The 20 produced armoured radio vehicles Sd. Kfz. 263 were all based on the Magirus M 206 a chassis. The turret was not movable. The two frontal supporters of the roof antenna attached on the front of the turret are typical. Normally, a radio mast is visible in the turret. It seems that it was dismounted in the case of the illustrated vehicle.
