As one of three fighter squadrons of the 1st Fighter Wing, the 27th is tasked to provide air superiority for United States or allied forces by engaging and destroying enemy forces, equipment, defenses or installations for global deployment. As one of eight special operations wings within Air Force Special Operations Command, the 27th Special Operations Wing's core missions include close air support, agile combat support, information operations, precision strike, forward presence and engagement, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance operations, and specialized mobility.

Cannon Air Force Base, home of the 27th Special Operations Wing, lies in the high plains of eastern New Mexico, near the Texas Panhandle. The base is eight miles west of Clovis, New Mexico, and is 4,295 feet above sea level. The base itself sits on 3,789 acres of land.

Responsible for all flight line, back shop and ammunition maintenance in support of the 27th Special Operations group mission, the 27 SOMXG conducts quality maintenance for five different types of aircraft across four squadrons, seven defense contractor groups and 1,400 Air Commando maintainers.
