The Great Western Railway (GWR) 2884 Class is a class of 2-8-0 steam locomotive. They were Collett's development of Churchward 's earlier 2800 Class and are sometimes regarded as belonging to that class.

The Great Western Railway (GWR) 2800 Class is a class of Churchward-designed 2-8-0 steam locomotive. The class was designed by George Jackson Churchward for heavy freight work. They were the first 2-8-0 locomotive class in Great Britain. [1] The prototype, originally numbered 97 but later renumbered 2800, appeared in 1903.

2013年7月14日 · Running numbers: 2800 - 2899, 3800 - 3866. 1938-39 (2884 - 2899, 3800 - 3803) to lot number 321. The prototype of the '2800' class, number 97, was the first locomotive to operate in Britain with this wheel arrangement. It was fitted with the Standard number 1 boiler working at 200 p.s.i. and cylinders of 18 inches diameter.

Twenty of the 2800 and 2884 class locomotives were rebuilt to oil burning during the coal crisis of 1947. They were renumbered in the 4800 series (causing the 4800 class of 0-4-2Ts to be renumbered in the 1400 series). By 1950 they were all converted back to coal burning with their original numbers.

2018年5月12日 · This week we decided to start with the Great Western Railway (GWR) 2800 and 2884 Class. After looking into the history of both classes, we then onto the preserved members, in particular, the ones under restoration. The first engine No.97, which would later become No.2800, was built in 1903 at Swindon Works.

Wikipedia reports that over the long production run, superheaters came in two varieties: four-element and six-element. The data in this entry show the higher superheater area available from the six-element setup. A four-element superheater comprised 191.8 sq ft (17.82 sq m).

The GWR prototype 2-8-0 locomotive 2800 (originally No 97) was built in 1903 and underwent two years of trials before further production began which resulted in 84 of the class being built. The design was much in advance of its time and this class and the slightly modified 2884 class were built from 1903 until 1942.
