The tank was supposed to be a mobile AA gun carrier as China had an exclusively static AA gun. the choice of using type 62 as the platform was an economical and logistic choice as well as efficient.

However, it is generally regarded as the best candidate for a mid-rank SPAAG since the 20 mm is the potent Rh 202 and, relative to the M19 and M42, it's largely enclosed with only the gunner popping out of the cupola.
