Nov 16, 2020 · The two 383 engines (by Curtis Redgap) The Chrysler 383 RB was an odd engine, created because Chrysler wanted a 383 but the factory could only produce enough 383 "B" engines for Dodge, Plymouth, and DeSoto. However, the new RB assembly line was under-used; so an RB 383 was created, in two and four barrel versions, for two years.

Nov 16, 2020 · Chrysler engineers created a 383 engine out of the RB 413 block, with a narrower bore - so there was a large-bore, short-stroke Dodge 383 and a small-bore, long-stroke Chrysler "Golden Lion" 383. The 383 RB was only available in 1959 and 1960 on the US-built Chrysler Windsor and Saratoga (thanks, Ian Smale and Bill Watson).

Jul 28, 2013 · The 383 has a shorter stroke than the 360, and even longer rods, so the rod angularity is virtually nil. This allows there to be minimal bore wear over time. 383's have been, and are known as longevity motors. 360's last, but not to the same degree and not as often.

Jan 11, 2021 · Two-barrel 383 was a big “economy” engine. Four-barrel was performance. Not sure about 1971 but in earlier years there was a regular-cam 383 and a performance-cam 383, both four-barrels, as well. I wish I could remember which years had which engine marketing... but I'd be sure you have the performance-cam 383.

So the decrease in compression was offset by the increase in displacement. In other words, by the time of transition from 383 to 400 they were pretty evenly matched.

The 383, 413, 426 and 440 were "RB" blocks The RB block 383 was only made from 1959 to 1960, to fill a engine switch at the one plant. (I can't remember which one) but there were 2 DIFFERENT "383's" by Mopar, one a B block and another a RB block. Thing is, MOST "383's" are B block, as the RB was only produced a maximum of 2 years.
