Over the period 3–8 October 1951, 3 RAR fought the Battle of Maryang San, which is widely regarded as one of the Australian Army's greatest accomplishments of the Korean War, and a copybook example of a deliberate Battalion attack over successive enemy defensive positions.

The first version of TBAS was trialled in late 2009 by Special Forces Units and 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR). Design improvement recommendations were brought together by the Australian Defence Test and Evaluation Office and provided to SMSPO to inform the development of the second version.

On 28 September 1950, 3RAR landed at Pusan, South Korea. The battalion was part of the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade. Troops from 3RAR were rotated and replaced on an individual basis, and 3RAR remained in Korea for the duration of the conflict.

3RAR was involved in an attack on an enemy bunker system in Long Khanh province as part of Operation Overlord (6-7 June). The bunker system was captured by the battalion, along with a second bunker system further south. On 1 October the battalion ceased its offensive operational commitment and returned to Nui Dat. It was replaced by 9RAR.
