If you're trying to decide between a 50T Brompton and a 44T
Jan 14, 2023 · After the 44T chainring upgrade, hill climbs feel better overall. The cadence I have on 3 - 4% hills feels more natural and the lowest gear is now low enough for me on the steeper hills when I'm tired. My 21 gear bike still has a lower gear than a C Explore 44T but it's not such a big difference now. I hope my experience helps anyone on the fence.
44T advice needed : r/Brompton - Reddit
Jan 15, 2023 · You’ll also need a chain tool to remove chain links equal to ~half the difference the between teeth. So 50>44T means removing ~3 links. Reasons: smaller rings introduce too much chain slack for the derailleur to spring-tension chain while the bike is in folded position; and ~half is due to the chain only wrapping ~half the chainring.
Change to 44t or 54t chainring? : r/Brompton - Reddit
May 27, 2023 · My Brompton dealer recommended the 44t chainring, as it does not require a new chain and seems logical, considering that the standard gearing is quite high. However, I use the top gear more often (though still only rarely) than the lowest gear (almost never), which seems to make the 54t chainring the better choice.

44T Chainring, 19 Miles, 3 Trips, 2 Bridges, 1 Day : r/Brompton
Oct 8, 2021 · Installed the 44T chainring this week on my S6L and took it out all day on Wed. Two stops, AM and PM rush hour, and a very cool trip at night on the HRG! My legs adapted quite easily to the lower gearing. And I swear I'm riding faster, LOL. For this upgrade, I also purchased a new, pre-shortened chain.
1x peeps, what size front chainring you running? : r/gravelcycling
May 24, 2022 · Update: thanks for the advice. I went with a 44t because well that’s all my LBS’ supplier has in stock and I love it. No longer have to spin on the flats to get any speed and still enough for me to get up local hills. Probably will want something smaller for more serious off-road action but for my riding it’s perfect.
Deciding between 40T or 38T chainring (SRAM Rival XPLR 10-44)
I have a Scott Addict Gravel with Sram AXS Rival XPLR. It has a 42T front chainring and the 10-44T cassette. It is great for the road and flats, but I often find myself wanting an extra gear on steep climbs. I'm going to change the front ring for a smaller one, but I'm unsure whether I should go for the 40T or 38T chainring.

50T to 44T, do I need to shorten the chain? : r/Brompton - Reddit
Jun 14, 2022 · The Wife is about 4'-9.25" with her legs being short as well I changed the cranks from 170mm to 145mm; So I saved her knee 2inches of travel from bottom to top of her; There is no knee pain now; By doing this she had less leverage on the crank, so I went for the 38t.
