The British Rail Class 455 is an electric multiple unit passenger train built by BREL [1] between 1982 and 1985. It is operated on suburban services in Greater London and Surrey by South Western Railway, as well as formerly by Southern.

The Class 455 is a four-carriage train that is used on our mainline suburban network. We have 84 of these trains. The Class 455/7 units were built as three car units and use TSOs that were used with Class 508 and thus have a much different roof profile. As at January 2000, Southwest Trains operated all of the class 455/7 and 455/9 units and 28 units of 455/8. Connex SC operated 46 units of 455/8 numbered 5801-5846.

Instead, I’m concentrating on the 20 strong Class 455/9 fleet that all work on SWR and are based at Wimbledon Park depot. The 455/9s were built at York works in 1985. They were identical to the earlier 455/7s apart from the fact they didn’t use recycled class 508 TSO trailers and were built as brand-new 4-car units.

Built by BREL at York works in the early and mid-1980s, they were initially categorised as Class 510 as the successor to the Class 508. They were used on suburban services in South London, by South West Trains and Southern.
