The BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0 is a class of steam locomotive designed by Robert Riddles for British Railways (BR). 115 locomotives were built to this standard. The class was designed at the ex-LNER works at Doncaster which was also responsible for building 70 of the 115-strong class. The remaining 45 were built at Horwich. [1] .

76084 arrived at Barry on 11 September 1968 in a convoy with 76077, having been split from 76079 and 76080 somewhere along the way. This date is significant because it was the first day a Barry locomotive left for preservation in the form of Midland 4F 43924.

These locomotives were built for intermediate passenger and cross-country work, and were smaller than the Standard 75000 class. They were based closely on the LMS 43000 Ivatt 2-6-0 class which was introduced in 1947 but were still being built in 1952. The 43000 class were built at Horwich, Doncaster and Darlington.
