It was originally named Barbury Castle, and was renamed Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in September 1937 (the name coming from the GWR Dukedog Class no 3200/9000). It had a double chimney and 4 row superheater fitted in October 1958.

It continues to tear up the record books as far as performances go, on Shap, in Scotland and on its home patch. Indeed, pretty much everywhere it goes, it flies the flag for the very best of what GWR locomotive design was.

No. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgecumbe" has been taken out of service for its 10 year overhaul having last been steamed at Tyseley Locomotive Works open day on July 1st 2018. Its hoped the locomotive will return to the mainline again soon.
