The 522nd FS was the first squadron of the Canon based 27th Wing to receive F-16s. It was equipped with the F-16 together with its sister squadrons – the 523rd and 524th. In the first place these were block 30 airframes received from various other units.

The 522nd Fighter Squadron "Fireballs" is a combat-ready F-16CJ lighter squadron prepared to deploy worldwide to conduct day and night, air-to-air and air-to-ground combat and contingency operations.

Following an extensive Operational Test and Evaluation of the airframe and its new capabilities, the unit will utilize these aircraft to accomplish global special operations taskings as an Air Force component of USSOCOM.
