5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (5RAR) was raised at the Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney on 1 March 1965. It was comprised of surplus 1RAR soldiers and some of the first conscripts. The battalion arrived in Vietnam throughout April and May 1966.

The 5th Battalions have had a long and distinguished career in the Australian Army dating back to its formation in 1885 in the city of Bendigo, as part of Victoria's colonial military forces. After Federation in 1901 the military forces were reorganised and the 5th Infantry Regiment was established in Melbourne.

2022年6月7日 · In 1966, the Australian Government announced that 5 RAR was to serve in South Vietnam, as one of the two battalions of the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF). After an intensive training period 5 RAR marched through the streets of Sydney on 21st April 1966 and departed by air and HMAS SYDNEY for South Vietnam.

5RAR was involved in extensive search and destroy operations with a key area being the Nui Thi Vai Mountains, where it engaged the 274th VC Regiment and cleared numerous tunnels and fortifications, capturing the wireless and log book of the Deputy Commander of 274 Regiment, a major intelligence find for the Task Force.

The Fifth Battalion was presented with the Queen’s and Regimental Colours on Sunday 29th October 1967. His Excellency, The Governor of New South Wales, Sir Roden Cutler, V.C., K.C.M.G., C.B.E. presented the colours to 2Lt. DG Lovell.

Arguably the most well known action ever fought by the 5th Battalion was the Battle of Binh Ba, which took place between 6 and 8 June 1969 and saw the defeat of a well armed and determined North Vietnamese Army (NVA) battalion.
