I think black plates were used because a black surface is the most emissive, and hence will shed heat the easiest. I don't think it necessarily means the tubes sound better, that may be mostly ebay tube lore...

Is there any good sounding ECF82, 6U8A, or 6F2 known by anyone? Preferably with good dynamics, good bass control, smooth mids and without overbright hi-end?
