The 71st Special Operations Squadron is part of the 58th Special Operations Wing at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. It operates Bell Boeing CV-22 Osprey conducting special operations flying training.

In June 1969 the 71st SOS returned its flag to the United States leaving some of its G models and two thirds of its personnel in Vietnam to fill out a new gunship squadron designated the 17th SOS. By late 1969 the 14th Special Operations Wing had 16 119Gs and 12 119Ks operating from five airbases throughout Vietnam.

Recently activated on 20 May 2005, the 71 SOS serves as the Air Force's CV-22 training squadron. Operations: During World War II, the 71st Troop Carrier Squadron conducted airborne assaults on Normandy, Holland, and Germany, relief of Bastogne, and aerial transportation of passengers and cargo within the European Theater of Operations.

In 1968, the Air Force Reserve (AFRES) 71st Tactical Airlift Squadron mobilized and converted to the AC-119G Shadow gunship, becoming the 71st Special Operations Squadron (SOS). The 71st SOS deployed the first of 18 AC-119G gunships to South Vietnam in December 1968.

71st Special Operations Squadron arrived Home June 6, 1969 to Bakalar Air Force Base. Then Governor Edgar D. Whitcomb, a W.W.II veteran and former POW, was on hand to greet the returning airmen. The 71st SOS lost no personnel in combat and all returned home.
