The Type 86, also known as WZ501, is a Chinese variant of the Soviet BMP-1 (Type 86G) infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

The APC is given the standard Chinese 14.7 mm heavy machine gun, the modernized IFV Type 86A a 20 mm autocannon, or a 14.7 mm HMG in turret in the export variant. Both can fire HE-frag or AP rounds with much more accuracy and superior rate of fire.

2016年7月28日 · The motor rifle units of the PLA`s Land Forces have been receiving ZBD-86A IFVs to replace ageing WZ501 vehicles. The ZBD-86A IFV retains the hull of BMP-1 / BMP-2. The Chinese defense industry has developed a new manned turret to up-gun the vehicle.

86a的动力系统与86式基本相同，为6v150型四冲程水冷柴油机，额定功率215千瓦（2600转/分）。而bmp-2同样继承了bmp-1的动力系统，即utd-20型四冲程水冷柴油机，额定功率221千瓦（2600转/分）。由于bmp-2的战斗全重要略大于86a，因此两者的单位功率基本相当。

The Type 86, also known as WZ501, is a Chinese copy of the the Russian BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). China obtained several BMP-1s from the Middle East in the 1980s, and these vehicles were used as patterns for reverse engineering, which was known as Project WZ501.

The ZBD86A is a mechanized infantry fighting vehcile of Chinese origin. It is an upgraded and rearmed variant of the Type 86, whichs is a reverse engineered Soviet BMP-1. In the early 1980’s China acquired a Soviet BMP-1 and reverse engineered it for domestic use and export sales. The Type 86 is a direct copy of the Soviet BMP-1.

中国北方工业总公司（norinco）wz501型（pla指定为86式）是俄国bmp-1步兵战车（ifv）的一种中国仿造型，在1960年内被首次引进。86式在1980年后期进入pla服役被当做最主要的步兵战车在战场上伴随主战坦克，并且大约制造了2,000~3,000辆。

Type 86 was modernized in 1990s and early 2000s, resulting in Type 86-I and ZBD-86A. Several hundred Type 86 IFVs were converted into the ZBD-86A standard. Both variants are fitted with autocannons, making them function broadly similar to the BMP-2.
