Ferociously quick, the 924 Carrera GTR was the strongest and fastest—barring only the GTR Le Mans and GTP—of Porsche’s first-generation water-cooled racing cars. In 1979, Porsche began developing its 924 Turbo as a Group 4 GT entry for the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans.

There were GTRs built with the 2.0 924 engine, but the intercooler and intake were very similat to the 944 as was the location and exhaust system with turbo. The 924 Carrera GT road was based on the 924 Turbo, but was widened and lightened considerably. By boosting the Turbo-pressure and the compression, the blown four cylinder engine produced an impressive 210 bhp.

The Carrera GTR was the ultimate 924 Street/Race Car in 1981. The GTR had larger flares, larger wheels and tires, improved brakes and a whopping 375 horsepower from the 2.0L turbo dry-sump engine.
