Cluster multispacecraft determination of AKR angular beaming - Mutel …
2008年4月9日 · In addition, since the Cluster constellation forms a 2-dimensional array on the sky, it can simultaneously sample the burst over a range of solid angles. Finally, by measuring the differential delays between pairs of spacecraft, the locations of individual AKR bursts can also be determined [Mutel et al., 2003]. This provides a spatial filter ...

Polar spacecraft observations of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) spectra, combined with simultaneous optical images of the auroral oval at the source foot points, show a strong correlation...

2022年1月24日 · Mutel et al. report the first multi-spacecraft observations of AKR in the auroral acceleration region allowing the identification of the wave modes and plasma parameters. To help understanding of these results we briefly review wave propagation in a cold, magnetized plasma.
Determining the angular beaming characteristics of ter- restrial auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) has been an im- portant focus of AKR investigations since its discovery more than forty years ago. Gurnett [1974] made the rst analysis of AKR beaming using one year of Imp-6 and Imp-8 satellite observations of AKR emission.

We used the Cluster Wideband Data instrument to determine the locations of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) using very long baseline interferometry. The technique involves cross-correlating individual AKR bursts from all six Cluster baselines using time and frequency filtered waveforms.

Recently I have used Iowa' s WBD receivers on four Cluster spacecraft in VLBI mode to study the Earth's AKR, a naturally occurring radio emission associated with aurora. A detailed description of these programs can be found by clicking on the Research button above.
ESA Science & Technology - Cluster multispacecraft determination of AKR ...
Simultaneous observations of AKR emission using the four-spacecraft Cluster array were used to make the first direct measurements of the angular beaming patterns of individual bursts. By comparing the spacecraft locations and AKR burst locations, the angular beaming pattern was found to be narrowly confined to a plane containing the magnetic ...
Auroral kilometric radiation—The electron cyclotron maser paradigm
2022年12月7日 · Auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is the paradigm of intense radio emission from planetary magnetospheres. Being close to the electron gyro frequency and/or its lower harmonics, its observation indicates the non-thermal state of the source plasma.
Striated AKR Emission: A Remote Tracer of Ion Solitary Structures
2006年9月28日 · We describe the statistical properties of narrowband drifting auroral kilometric radiation ('striated' AKR) based on observations from the Cluster wideband receiver during 2002-2005.
