Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to ASEAN reached a record $230 billion in 2023. The increase was marginal – less than 1 per cent – but it occurred despite a 10 per cent decline in global FDI.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows record the value of cross-border transactions related to direct investment during a year which consist of equity transactions, reinvestment of earnings, and intercompany debt transactions.

In 2023, ASEAN attracted US$229.8 billion of FDI, a slight increase of 0.3% from US$229.2 billion in 2022. Singapore remained the top recipient of inward FDI flows in the region, attracting US$159.6 billion, which accounted for almost 70% of total inward FDI flows to ASEAN, followed by Indonesia (US$21.6 billion) and Viet Nam (US$18.5 billion).

Inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) in ASEAN increased by 42 per cent in 2021 to $174 billion, the pre-pandemic record level (figure 1). The rebound underscores the resilience of the region, which has been battered by successive waves of the pandemic.

In 2023, ASEAN attracted USD 226 billion of FDI, or 17 percent of global FDI. This was also a positive growth of 1.2 percent against the backdrop of global and other region’s FDI inflow slowdown in 2023 (See Table 1), reflecting its economic competitiveness as a region.
