Santa Fe (ATSF) No. 4001 was a Class 4000 2-8-2 Mikado type steam locomotive built for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1921. The engine was ultimately retired and scrapped in 1953.

But that same year also saw the perhaps-inevitable absorption in December of the SF&SJV by a major railroad. At least it was the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe and its construction granted the ATSF a key north-south route through California.

ATSF 4001 Delivered new as ATSF 4001, became BNSF 8701 at the merger but was later renumbered to BNSF 160

ATSF 4001 was delivered in May 1988. Cool or not but 4 GP60s and a GP50 lead this train. My dad has some better shot and it was confirmed that the middle unit is a GP 50. The parade continued all day near Belen, as there was some backlog from a derailment several days earlier.
