Where the GP40 had a 16-645E3 prime mover rated at 3000hp, the GP40X's used the 16-645F rated at 3500hp, the engine later incorporated into the GP50. Unlike the GP50, the GP40X's also sported flared radiators, the likes of which hadn't been seen since the SD45.

A total of 23 were produced for four different railroads: 10 for ATSF, 3 for Southern, 4 for Southern Pacific and 6 for Union Pacific.

[1] Power for this unit was provided by a turbocharged 16-cylinder 16-645F3B engine which could produce 3,500 horsepower (2,610 kW). 23 examples of this locomotive were built for North American railroads. 1998年9月27日 · The GP40X was the experimental precursor to the GP50. Santa Fe owned the largest fleet: 10 units. Two ended up in red and yellow during the SPSF era, but #3803 was repainted back to blue and yellow soon after the merger denial. The 3805 kept its SPSF colors somewhat longer - long enough for Steve Emerson to capture the image above.

Thought I'd throw in a scan of an ATSF GP40X, #3802 (along with 2 GP50's), posing near the end of track on the Pasadena Sub in Arcadia, CA while the crew was eating lunch nearby on 2/20/95. This was quite a high horsepower 4-axle consist for the Pasadena local, which usual consists of GP30, GP35, and GP39-2 models.
