In the military, failure to report is a serious crime. The unit cannot function when its members are unreliable and fail to perform their duties. II. What is a Deserter? The criteria by which a soldier is classified as a deserter have varied over time. Currently, any soldier who has taken an unauthorized leave from his/her training or duty station is considered AWOL.
