This was a two-speed (7½ & 3¾ ips) quarter-track stereo recorder with a 7″ reel capacity, four glass & crystal ferrite heads and automatic and manual reverse (playback only). The transport comprised three motors. an AC servo motor for direct capstan drive and two Eddy-current outer rotor reel motors.

This is the Akai GX-280D 7" reel to reel tape deck dating from around 1973. We got this deck in on trade from a local customer that upgraded to a 10" Akai deck. It features 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS speeds, the two most common consumer tape deck speeds, and 1/4 track operation, to play all standard consumer tapes.

The GX-280D-SS was a four channel, four-head, three-motor relay controlled machine, with auto-reverse and auto play. In stereo mode, the auto reverse function operated on playback only. However, in 4-channel mode, as there was no reverse side, ‘auto-repeat’ was selectable.

A beautiful, one of the best 4-channel professional-grade deck from Akai. Was serviced (the only thing that needed replacement was the tape counter - fixed, $100). Cosmetically excellent as well, save for a small imperfection on the right top corner (see pictures).
