The ALCO Century 628 was a six-axle, 2,750 hp (2,051 kW) diesel-electric locomotive. A total of 186 C628s were built between December 1963 and December 1968. There were 135 C628s built for US railroads, 46 C628s built for Mexican railroads, and five C628s for Australia.

The C628 was intended as a replacement for the C624, announced at the Chicago launch event, but never produced due to being made rapidly obsolete by improvements in engine technology. The C628 was powered by a 2,750-horsepower, 16-cylinder, Model 251C engine.

ALCo built the 2,750hp C628 from 1963-1967. Conrail inherited 15 of the ALCo 251C V16-powered units from Penn Central, and 17 from the Lehigh Valley. They were numbered in CR series 6721-6752.
