In 1947 the Alaska Railroad began a rebuild program to enclose the car bodies on ALCO road switchers to create streamlined locomotives for the Aurora passenger trains.

The ALCO RSD-1 is a diesel-electric locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO). This model was a road switcher type rated at 1,000 horsepower (750 kW) and rode on three-axle trucks, having a C-C wheel arrangement.

Built by ALCO in February 1943 and delivered as US Army RSD1 #8047 with three axle trucks. Acquired by Alaska Railroad in December 1949 (originally to become ARR #1022?) it was rebuilt in January 1950 by Puget Sound Bridge & Drydock into RF1A with two axle B-B trucks.

ARR #1050A and 1050B were the prototype tests for the the following production of the ARR Class RF1 ALCO Locomotives. Army surplus ALCO RSD1 locomotives USA 8040 and 8054 were rebuilt by International Car Co. of Kenton, Ohio and delivered in October of 1947.

Alaska Railroad No. 1050 was an Alco RF1A diesel locomotive built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) in 1943 under works number 70661. It was originally built for the US Army as RSD1 No. 8040.

2023年6月2日 · The RSD-1 accomplished two improvements: 1) more tractive effort, and 2) less weight per axle (for use on lighter rails). At the same time, the 1,000 HP was spread over 6 motors/axles in lieu of 4, so speed and acceleration decreased. 2005年2月16日 · My local area railroad (Atlanta and St. Andrew’s Bay aka the Bayline) donated one of their old locomotives awhile back to our Jr. Museum. I contacted the rail management company and was told that it was an Alco RF1 model. Does anyone know if any of the model companys have ever made an RF1 model in HO scale?
