The GE U36B is a four-axle 3,600 hp (2.7 MW) B-B diesel-electric locomotive produced by General Electric from 1969 to 1974. It was primarily used by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and its successors, although thirteen provided the power for the original Auto Train. The U36B was the last GE high-horsepower universal series locomotive.

2025年1月2日 · The U36B was a compact design at just over 60 feet in length, yet offered 600 more horsepower than any other model. By comparison, Alco offered its C636 and Electro-Motive its SD45; both of which could also produce 3,600 horsepower.

GE actually has the distinction of developing the first commercial diesel-electric locomotive. In addition, it worked in conjunction with Ingersoll-Rand and American Locomotive (Alco) to develop early boxcabs of the 1920's. GE and Alco would partner for years, a relationship that held strong through the early 1950s.

u36b The four 3,600hp U36B's that Conrail purchased from GE in 1976 were originally built for the Auto Train to Seaboard Coast Line specs but were never delivered to AT. Conrail assigned them series CR 2971-2974.

Conrail placed the locomotives into series 2971-2974. The Seaboard Coast Line specs can be seen in the various details of the locomotives. Many of these details are unique among Conrail units: a firecracker antenna, a red and white signal light in the short hood, five chime horns, and an SCL-style rounded pilot.

The GE U36C is a 3600 hp diesel-electric locomotive model built by GE Transportation Systems. The length of the locomotive was 67 ft 3 in (20.50 m), standard for U30C, U33C, U34CH, U36C, U36CG, C30-7 and C36-7. The U36C also had steel capped pistons.
