Atari ST is a line of personal computers from Atari Corporation and the successor to the company's 8-bit home computers. The initial model, the Atari 520ST, had limited release in April–June 1985, and was widely available in July.

The Atari ST was the first TOS machine developed by Atari Corporation, being released in 1985. For the time, the ST featured a powerful processor, a large amount of memory, a colourful display, and an easy-to-use GUI operating system, all for a very cheap price.

The operating system in the Atari ST is TOS, which stands for "The Operating System". It combines the GEM GUI and the underlying GEMDOS, a DOS-like operating system, both developed by Digital Research. TOS is stored in onboard ROM chips, though early versions of the Atari ST came with TOS on floppy disks.

The Letters "ST" refer to the machine's internal architecture (Sixteen/Thirty-two bits) and its operating system TOS, which stands for The Operating System. The ST-line saw upgrades almost every year.
