This is an increase from less than 50 metric tons per day SO 2 measured in December 2024. Water vapor and volcanic gas billowed from a dramatic, linear series of pits or vents extending about 1,250 m (4,100 ft) across the heavily crevassed and disrupted glacial-ice cover on the north side of the summit region. Multiple sources of vapor from these vents explain the apparent double plume seen in the photograph of September 17.
